"Professionalism: It's not the job you do, It's HOW you do the job."

As a professional I believe it is important to be involved in a life long commitment to service. During my hygiene program I was a member of Americorps. Throughout my membership in Americorps, I logged two separate terms of service of 300 hours each term to my community. Being a part of this program helped me to realize that importance of service and the need for continual service in the community. I felt so good inside knowing that I was being involved in my community and bettering peoples lives by providing hygiene services, free cancer screenings, and increasing my knowledge of oral health and sharing it with others. As a dental health professional, I commit to serving throughout my life to those who are in need of oral hygiene services. I also commit to lifelong learning and to continue to increase my knowledge and education in this profession in effort to provide quality care to my patients and to my community.
As a dental professional, I am a firm believer in continuing education and staying current and advancing my knowledge and skills in the dental hygiene profession. I believe that part of being a professional includes empowering and leading others in an effort to further education and to promote lifelong learning and growth. I understand that entering the dental profession involves being a part of the continual process to educate the community on the importance of health care and to promote oral health and prevention.
One of the leadership opportunities that I had during my dental hygiene program was to help organize and plan an oral health promotion project at Taft Elementary school. We collected donated supplies and planned an oral hygiene and nutrition education piece to teach to the sixth graders. After we taught them about nutrition and oral hygiene, we observed them as they taught the kindergartners what they learned. This was a rewarding experience as we watched 120 students learn about nutrition and oral hygiene in just a few hours.
