Assessments include reviewing the medical history of each patient, researching medications that may effect their oral health or dental care, a thorough extra oral and intra-oral cancer screening, occlusion, gingival descriptions, mobility/fremitis, plaque indices, tobacco questionnaires, caries risk assessment, dentition charting, and full periodontal charting at each appointment.
Planning: After assessments, I believe it is important to formulate a proper treatment plan on an individualized basis for each patient. This includes my recommended therapeutic procedures as well as any necessary adjunctive therapies.
During implementation each patient is provided with oral hygiene education tailored to their needs as well as thorough hygiene treatment within the scope of dental hygiene practice.
Evaluation is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment that was provided. This allows the treatment plan to be modified if necessary.
Click HERE to view one of my case presentations that I wrote on a patient that I treated during my third semester of dental hygiene school. During this patient care experience I learned a lot about different personalities of patients, as well as how to manage a patient with a personality and attitude that is not congruent with my own. I believe that this is a crucial attribute to have when treating patients in order to build a relationship of trust and rapport.
